Meme time~~
Hello flist, how are you?

I know I've been bad at the whole LJ-journal update thing. I'm still here nearly every day to read all your posts though <3 but those of you who still write posts already knew that :3

I'm shamelessly stealing this from Jessie.

1. what countries did you visit?
Started the year in Osaka, Japan. Then went to Tokyo. Then came back home mid-January and went to Kyoto in March, came back home from that in June. Went to Dusseldorf, Germany for the JLPT in July, to London in September, and then to Dusseldorf again in December.
2. what would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
- My JLPT N1 degree
- My MA degree
- A real job (preferably one in Kansai)

3. what date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Three dates
Feb 4: My uncle passed away quite suddenly
April 1: Started dating Laura
November 27: My grandpa passed away, after discovering he had lung cancer only 7 weeks earlier.

4. what was your biggest achievement of the year?
Does nearly passing JLPT N1 count? Hahaha. Just kidding, I think my internship was my biggest achievement. Getting accepted for it, actually going, organizing an exhibition and doing lots of other things, including writing research reports afterwards. Yep.

Though getting accepted for my health insurance job was probably harder, omg ALL the interview rounds.

5. what was the best thing you bought?
I bought so much stuff this year it’s hard to choose. My plane ticket back to Osaka for January 19? My black and pink sparkly nail polish from Etude House? My first pair of skinny jeans?

6. where did most of your money go?
Traveling for sure.

7. compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder.
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner (though not by much)
iii. richer or poorer? Richer

8. what do you wish you'd done more of?
Thesis writing. Reading actual books. Drawing.

9. what do you wish you'd done less of?
This is gonna sound terrible but: comforting my mom. Our family has gone through a lot this year and I’ve been there for my mom for most of it, but she hasn’t been able to be there for me at all, because every time I’d try to talk to her she’d dominate the conversation with her own feelings and problems. And part of the problem is that she is a sensitive person and she feels (too) comfortable sharing with me. But part of it is also my fault for not telling her when to just listen to me. It has changed into relationship into something where she can’t really be there for me anymore and it makes both of us sad.

10. did you fall in love in 2013?
Yes.

11. what was the best book you read?
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake – Aimee Bender

12. what did you want and get?
An internship, a relationship, a job to earn money to go back to Japan.

13. what did you want and not get?
My N1 and my MA degree hahaha.

14. what kept you sane?
Who said anything about being sane.

15. tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013.
Material things are not important, people and memories are.

I wasn’t a super material person before this year, not having been raised that way, but I’ve come to realize the unnecessary amount of stuff I own regardless. I’d like to be more thoughtful about what I buy in the future.

16. did you know anybody who got married?
No? I don’t think so? Some people got engaged but?

17. what's something you thought you'd never do but did in 2013?
I signed up for an EXO longfic challenge with Gwynn. Also other things involving Korean boys but tmi hahaha.

18. what has been your favorite moment?
The first 4/5 hours of the year were pretty epic?

19. what's something you learned about yourself?
- I’m apparently not easy to figure out at first
- I bottle up emotions like a pro
- My English pronunciation has gotten good enough to fool native speakers :3

20. were you in a relationship this year?
Yes and I still am! <3 <3 <3 We somehow passed the 9 month mark without really noticing it? Really excited to be in the same time zone with her again <3

EDIT: I realize this post might read as somewhat depressing but I'd like to reiterate that while truly awful things did happen last year, good things also happened and all in all I think the scales were tipped slightly in favor of 'good year' rather than 'bad year'. Like feeling wise it was between 55-60% good. Emotionally I've had worse years.
